Sync to Dropbox

Alfons Schmid, October 16, 2009 16:08

Dropbox does not support WebDAV, and they have not yet published their own interface that third-party applications like Notebooks could use. So currently there is no way to sync Notebooks with Dropbox - although the idea is intriguing ...

We are monitoring their development.

There is a Dropbox API which is being used by more and more apps/services: ReaddleDocs, Dataviz just announced future version will support Dropbox, don't know of others--see their web site.

GoodReader for iPad also supports DropBox, among others, FYI. :)

It is time to update our answer from nine months ago ;-)
We are already working on the integration, and if all goes well, the next major update will sync to Dropbox, too.

By the way: Notebooks for iPhone 4.0 and Notebooks for iPad 2.0 now support Dropbox :-)

Hi,

Does anyone know if DropBox sync can be automated? Right now it seems like it only syncs when its manually activated.

I can't even work out how to do that. How do I manually sync with Dropbox? Thanks

@chorwood, to sync with Dropbox:

1) On the Settings page, enable Dropbox Sync
2) Navigate back to a notebook. For example, from the main screen, tap the "Help" notebook.
3) Tap the title of notebook at the top of the screen to reveal the context menu. e.g. in the "Help" notebook, touch the notebook title "Help" at the top of the screen.
4) Tap the "Sync - Dropbox" button

If you want to sync all notebooks at once, you can do that by tapping the "Notebooks" title at the top of the main menu. Note that if you sync a protected notebook, it is not protected in Dropbox.

Edit: Just want to add, that I too would really like to see an auto-sync feature. PlainText is an example of an app that does this correctly.

When I do this action, sometimes it works, sometimes I doesn't... For example, I've just modified a file on my laptop. On another computer, I can see modifications.
But on Notebooks, it's still the old file ! Even after synchronization of the folder, or total synchronization of the root.
The problem often (but not always) appears when I add or suppress files as well.
What is the solution?

While Dropbox syncing works, it is somewhat weak in a sense of being able to resolve conflicts. If Notebooks sees a file modified in both locations it simply skips it and there is no way (aside from deletions and resynchronizations) to get it back right.
