Notebooks for iPhone Answers

What are illegal characters and who can I find them in a mass of Books and Notes?

Dieter Bentzen, October 18, 2011 10:04

When I try to backup my Notebooks using the iTunes Apps Documents and try to Save as then I get an error like "recommendet File not found". I found your advise not to use illegal characters. But what are that characters and where should they not be. Is it only in Book Names or also in Note Names? I think it would be a good idea to write out the name of the file that will not be created because of the name. I have hundrets of Notes in thens of Books (11 MB of text only!) It seems to be not possible to find the bad text.
Thanks in advance!
Dieter

Hi Dieter,

the "Windows illegal filename characters" are:

< > : " / \ | ? *

The error message you get in iTunes is issued by iTunes, so an app cannot do anything to influence that message. I agree that it would be very handy to know what file iTunes is complaining about, so it might be a good idea to send feedback directly to Apple.
I am sorry that we cannot do more about that.

Best,
Alfons

Ok Alfons, but what is about the file names. Will the files be createt by iTunes for the Books only or make iTunes separate files for each Note or Task?

Best, Dieter

Hi Dieter,

sorry for coming back so late. When iTunes exports the "Notebooks" folder, it takes all books and all notes and saves them as folders and documents on your computer. This is why the books' and notes' titles are converted to file names.
