Notebooks for iPhone Answers

App should provide feedback when syncing

Andrew Notepad, September 22, 2011 22:48

Set up iPhone. Added a notebook and some notes. Synced with DropBox.
-> It copied the notebook and notes to my DropBox folder
Set up iPad. Synced with DropBox
-> nothing happened!
Added a notebook with the same name on the iPad as the one on the iPhone
-> nothing happened!
Started filing a bug report, then double-checked iPad
-> notepad contents had been copied across.

There’s no indication that syncing is happening or will happen.

Also, it’s not obvious that you have to manually add a notebook on the other device to get it to read the notebook from DropBox.

(Apart from that, the app looks promising so far.)

Hi Andrew,

one explanation why the changes did not immediately appear on your iPad could be that Dropbox was not "ready". It may sometimes take a few moments after a sync until all items are available for the next sync.

A few other details:

With Autosyc, Notebooks syncs when you open a book (NB checks for changes in that book on DB) and ten seconds after your latest change in a book. In both cases, the spinning network indicator shows that a sync is in progress.

With manual sync, you should always get feedback which items are up-/downloaded.

If you want to see exactly which items are imported and exported, you could create a note with the title "Dropbox Log" at the top level of Notebooks. After sync, this note contains a list of all synced items.

I hope that helps.
Best,
Alfons

Okay, I’m just pointing out that

a) It’s not clear that you have to manually add a notebook with the same name on the other device in order to get it to sync over Dropbox. (It may be obvious to you, but I assumed that once I set up Dropbox syncing, all of my notebooks would be synced automatically.) So it would be good to have this in the documentation. Also:

b) Dropbox may take a few minutes to sync, which is fine, but it would be nice to get an indication/explanation of this in the app. For example, in the Dropbox desktop app, the Dropbox icon animates to indicate that it is syncing. I thought it hadn’t worked.
