Notebooks for iPhone Answers

Perfect app, except for full-screen mode

I just wrote a glowing review for the iPhone store, saying that this is the perfect app. I really do think it is a work of genius. I have just a couple of suggestions re. full-screen mode.

I love the fact that when you're editing and reading a doc you can go into full-screen mode by tapping on the top bar. The problem is that it's very hard to get the tap right. I have small fingers, but even so every time I tap I end up going to the notebook selection screen or getting the "insert date" screen, and I have to tap 5-6 times before I get it right. This really interferes with my concentration-- when I'm reading and editing documents I'd like to be able to go directly into full-screen mode without a lot of fidgeting and fuss.

The other issue is with the PDF reader. I'd like to be able to read all my PDFs in Notebooks, since I'm using it for everything else. But I find the PDF screen very small--even after I tap the bar to enter full-screen mode, there are still two bars at the top (the iPhone bar, and a status bar) which crowd the reading space. I notice that in GoodReader there's a true full-screen, without any clutter at the top. I'm still using GoodReader to read my PDFs because the screen is so much cleaner. I also don't like the way the page number sits at the top of the PDF reader for so long before disappearing. I realize this is probably built in functionality, since it seems to sit that long in other apps too. The problem is that because your screen is smaller (as a result of the two bars at the top), the page number blob is much more irritating-- it sits right in the upper-left hand corner where your eyes have to begin reading, and it really gets in the way.

So basically this is an amazing app that's so elegant and intuitive to use that these two annoying details really jump out at me.

Thank you very much for your feedback and review, xsaxsa!

I agree to the issues regarding full-screen mode, and I am glad to say that both of them have been addressed in Notebooks 3!

We have changed the sensitivity of the info bar which now is much much easier to hit. We also have changed the logic behind it a bit, and now tapping the info bar just activates and deactivates full-screen mode, it no longer hides the keyboard.

Due to several requests asking to remove the gray status bar (showing operator logo etc.) in full-screen mode, Notebooks 3 has an option in its settings to hide the status bar in full-screen mode. What remains is Notebooks' own info bar which we think is necessary because it lets you swipe to the next or previous document in the book. We might give it a few thoughts and see how we can further improve it, though.

Regarding the PDF page numbers you are correct, that is what the iPhone does by default. Notebooks uses the very convenient standard method for displaying PDFs here (which GoodReader does not), but if time permits we will improve the PDF handling, too.

Kind regards,

Alfons

Woops, I made a mistake-- I meant to say i'm using "One Disk" for PDFs, not "Good Reader". I'm looking forward to trying the new version, thanks!
