Notebooks for iPhone Answers

Sudden failure

I was right in the middle of using your program and suddenly my screen went black. I rebooted my ipad and when I tap on you app it appears as if it might start, but only for a second. All of my other apps work fine. Any ideas?

Hi Barbara,

I am sorry to hear you are having problems with Notebooks! I do not have an immediate idea what might keep Notebooks from starting up, and there is no "known issue", either. I have a few suggestions:

- When you take a look at the multitasking bar (press the home button twice), do you see Notebooks? If you do, terminate it by holding its icon until it starts to wiggle, and then pressing the red "-" sign

- If that does not help, do you remember if you had any tasks with "@" as the first character in their title? These might cause issues in the current version.

Finally, a few crash log files would help us track down the issue. They are written automatically when an app crashes, and when you synchronize with iTunes, all the crash logs are transferred to your computer. Here are their locations:

• Mac OS X :~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/
• Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/
• Windows Vista: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice/

The log file names start with Notebooks and have the extension “crash”. They are just plain text files and can be sent by e-mail in original or zipped form, or even copy-pasted into your e-mail program.

I would suggest that we continue the troubleshooting by mail: notebooksapp(at)me.com

Thanks,
Alfons

Yes, I had lots of tasks beginning with @. That is very much the GTD way! I had no idea that could cause a problem, although it didn't for over a month.

I ended up deleting notebooks and reinstalling it (I had tried everything else). Now I can't seem to import my info back from DropBox. Can you help me do that? For some reason nothing had been saved since 5/12/11, but it's better than nothing.

The next update will handle "@" at the first character of a task correctly; while we know that this character is often used in contexts, we just were not aware that our users have that in the titles of tasks as well :-(

When you way you cannot import back from Dropbox, does that mean that you cannot import *anything* from DB, or just certain documents? - Setting up Dropbox sync in Notebooks and then syncing the top level book is the usual way of getting all documents back from DB into NB ...

When you visit your DB account with a browser you have the option to turn on "Show hidden files". Does that bring back any of your missing documents?

Best,
Alfons

ok, it looks like my dropbox problem was my error. I've decided to use another app for my to do lists so that takes care of that problem. I'll just use yours for taking notes. Thanks for your help.
