Dropbox and SyncDocs, WebDav and hard drive

tchap44, April 25, 2011 17:33

I have three questions regarding Dropbox:
1. Since Dropbox functions so well (creates/deletes folders, etc, to & from device), is there any reason to continue with SyncDocs?
2. Are the DB files that we see on the computer actually on the HD as well as in the cloud? If so, is there any reason to maintain a copy of the files in "Documents" or some other place on the computer?
3. Since the files are also maintained in the cloud, is there any reason to continue with a WebDAV (in my case, MyDrive)?

Thanks.
Tom

Hi Tom,

thanks for your questions.

1) This is a personal choice. There are still many users who prefer to sync directly between Notebooks and the computer, and this is what SyncDocs does. Other users have become accustomed to SyncDocs and want to stick with it despite its drawbacks.
If DB works well for you then I think there is no reason to continue with SyncDocs.

2) If you installed the Dropbox client, then the documents are in the cloud and on your computer. Think there are several reasons why it makes sense to keep a copy on the computer. The main argument in my eyes is that it is so easy to open and edit those files locally, and all changes are synced to the cloud almost in real time. This virtually gives you a direct connection to Notebooks. Beside that, you have an extra backup of your files, and if you are using Timemachine on a Mac, those files are backed up, too.. But again, this is a personal choice.

3) If DB works well, I do not see a reason to continue with a WebDAV service.

Best,
Alfons

Thanks so much, Alfons. If I understand correctly your answer to #2, since the files located in Dropbox are also on the computer in the Dropbox folder, then there isn't any need to keep a copy of them in the "Documents" folder. Perhaps you could confirm that you agree or disagree with that idea.

You are correct, Tom, as the "Dropbox" folder is stored on your computer, too, there is no need to keep an extra copy of your documents in the "Documents" folder. Sorry I did not point that out more clearly.

Best,
Alfons
