You say Notebooks supports .doc files, but when I sync it says file type is not supported. I can only read .doc files after I have converted them to .txt. Is there no way for NB to read Word doc files?

It opens them via "Open with..." in the Mail.app. And syncs well via WebDAV/iDisk.

Please make sure that the Word document that you import has a ".doc" extension.
The filetype is always identified by the filename extension. If that is missing or incorrect then you may get the error you describe.
