After installing v 4.0 on my iPhone apps like ical, notes, contacts have kept data, Bento and much worse app Notebooks with scientifically important notes since years are blank and all sms/mms are gone.

Hello Rolf,
I am sorry to hear that you are having troubles after upgrading to iOS4. As far as I have seen, this is not unusual and should be solved by restoring the iPhone from the latest backup (which you probably made immediately before installing the new OS). - If that does not help, have you taken a look at Apple's discussion forums for recommended procedures?
