Notebooks for iPhone Answers

Bug with Dropbox (Notebooks 4.2.4 and Iphone 3GS 4.0.1)

Charles, January 13, 2012 14:06

Hello,
I tried to synchronise my notes on my iPhone in order to get a copy on my PC.
- It did not work with iTunes. Notebooks said look on "Documents Notebooks" on iTunes but I did not find any synchronised documents.
- It did not work with Dropbox. If I create a doc on the box it did not appear on Notebooks on my iPhone. But worse, if I select synchronise via Dropbox on Notebooks, the app closes.
Im really annoyed, now even if I want to read a note, the app just bug and closes, so I cant use Notebooks anymore!
Please help on how to fix it, and on how to synchronise my notes with either iTunes or Dropbox (I did not try Syncdocs yet). Thanks a lot!

Hello Charles,

I am sorry to hear that you are having troubles with Notebooks!

In case you have not yet seen, our handbook contains the most comprehensive documentation, it is available from our website at http://www.notebooksapp.com/Download.html

To export documents via iTunes, follow these steps

- turn on iTunes sync in Noteobooks' settings; this will place an "Export to iTunes" option into NB*s context menu (the menu you get when tapping the current book's title in the navigation bar)
- next, select a book or document and "Export to iTunes"
- when you now connect your iPhone to iTunes, you will find those books and documents in the Notebooks filesharing pane, ready to export to your computer

Regarding the Dropbox issues: from here it is hard to tell what actually might be wrong. Have you already tried to terminate NB from the multitasking bar? And have you tried restarting the iPhone? Does that change anything? What kind of note are you trying to open/read?

If you sent us the crash reports (they are automatically created whenever an app crashes) that would help us localize the issue. When you synchronize with iTunes, all the crash logs are transferred to your computer. Here are their locations:

• Mac OS X :~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/
• Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/
• Windows Vista: C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Apple computer\Logs\CrashReporter/MobileDevice/

The log file names start with Notebooks and have the extension “crash”. They are just plain text files and can be sent by e-mail in original or zipped form, or even copy-pasted into your e-mail program. Please send them at notebooksapp@me.com

Kind regards,
Alfons

Hello Alfons,
Thank you for your reply. Indeed I did not read the .pdf, but the info given under "Detail" on your website seemed to be clear enough for me.

1. iTunes sync:
I am sorry I did not scroll down in the Apps tab to find the Notebooks pane...it works, but I noticed some things which could be improved:
- files with ":" caracter at the end of their name are not synchronised
- "Transféré vers iTunes" should be written "Transférer vers iTunes" in French
- ".plist" files are created on every folder on the computer, tedious

2. Notebooks crash:
I selected both "Dropbox" and "iTunes" on the Notebooks settings, it seems that was the cause of the bug. Since I have selected only one option to synchronize, it seems to work again!

I will try Dropbox again and let you know.

Best regards,
Charles

Hello Alfons,
As iTunes synchronisation loses the format of the files (all caracters are in a row in a .txt file) I recently tried Dropbox, but I am still experiencing the problems described in my first mail above.

The app closes whether I clic on "Sync - Dropbox" for a file or for a book.
Odd enough, when I have entered a book so as to access its files, I cant get back to the books list using the NB arrow button, and the app closes soon after.
I can read notes, but when I try to edit one, again it crashes...

This time I made sure that just "Dropbox" (and not "iTunes") was selected on the NB settings.
I installed Dropbox on two computers and it works fine, it is just Dropbox for NB sync. on the iphone that does not.
I sent you the crash reports as requested.

Please help again,
Charles
