Lost Data

Thomas Doyle, January 01, 2012 16:11

When I upgraded my phone to the 4S everything synced as I expected except the data on the Notebooks App. It does contain some data which I really don't want to lose and I'm not sure where is it held so that I can extract it. It was password protected and I want to get to the data and simply print it out. Can you advise where the data is located and how I can do a simple extraction to recover the key information. Thanks in advance for any (simple step by step) advice you can offer.

Hello Thomas,

i am sorry to hear this, but usually there is a quick solution to this.

In case the Notebooks app was not installed during the restore procedure, you should do so manually either through iTunes or through the App Store (you will not be charged again). When you then launch Notebooks, all documents should immediately appear, as they should have been installed during the restore.

I hope that helps. In case you still have issues, please get in touch with us at notebooks app@me.com

Best,
Alfons

Thank you for the suggested solution to my lost data issue but sadly I =
re-installed the application from iTunes and synced with my phone but it =
did not transfer the required data across. Indeed I lost all the =
additional notes I had put in after the first data failure! I really do =
need to get hold of the data contained in my Mac (some of it goes back =
almost two years and I haven't been able to access it since early =
November) to either print it out or to access it in some other way to =
restore it to my phone.

Just getting to print it out would be ideal as I don't want to risk =
losing the data again.

Any help you can offer would be very welcome. Also the email address give app@me.com didn't work!

Hi again, Thomas,

You say that you synced after reinstalling Notebooks; that only transfers your documents from the iPhone to your computer. What you need is a "Restore", which you find by right-clicking (ctrl-click) your iPhone in iTunes' left column.

If that all does not helps, you might try one of the backup extractor applications, which are able to retrieve documents from iTunes backups. A few examples are:

http://supercrazyawesome.com/ or
http://www.iphonebackupextractor.com/
http://www.icopybot.com/itunes-backup-manager.htm

To avoid that situation in the future I would recommend to set up a second backup strategy besides iTunes. You might use Notebooks' Dropbox sync, for example, which has the additional bonus of syncing your documents directly with your desktop, too. If you have not yet signed in to Dropbox, you might use this referral link and get a few extra MB: http://db.tt/LWTD7Dw

I hope that helps!

Alfons
